They do the work in your browser, without uploading your file. Look for “On your device”.

Every tool works in one of two ways. The badge on its card tells you which, before you choose a file.
26 tools
These tools load the code they need, then open the file straight from your device. The file is not sent to us, so there is no copy for us to keep or delete. Your device does the work, which is why a very large file can feel slow on an older phone. If a job is too big for your device, a few of these tools offer to finish it on our server, and they ask first.
For example: Merge PDF, Split PDF, Edit PDF, PDF to Images, Compress images, Remove background.
16 tools
The rest do some or all of the work on our server. Converting Office files, compressing a PDF and password encryption all rely on engines that run there. Your file travels over an encrypted connection, the server works on a temporary copy, and we delete that copy when the job finishes or fails.
For example: Compress PDF, PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, Protect PDF, Redact PDF.
Image tools
Drawn examples of two of the 10 image tools. Both run in your browser, so the photo stays on your device.

FAQ
No. All 42 tools are free and work without an account. Nothing is stamped on the files you download, and there is no cap on how many jobs you run in a day. Each tool does have a file-size limit, shown on its page: 50 MB for most PDF tools that run on your device, and 30 MB for tools that upload the file.
It depends on the tool, and its card tells you before you start. 26 tools are marked “On your device”: they run in your browser and do not upload the file. The other 16 are marked “Secure upload”: they send the file to our server, do the job and delete the temporary copy when it finishes. The privacy policy has the details.
Compress PDF. Start with the Recommended setting. If you have a hard limit, such as 1 MB for a form upload, choose “Meet a size limit” and type the number. Scanned PDFs shrink the most, because every page is a photo. A PDF that is mostly text is small already and may barely change.
A PDF records where each character sits on the page. It does not store paragraphs, columns or table cells, so a converter has to rebuild them. Plain text comes across cleanly; multi-column layouts, merged table cells and unusual fonts are where differences show up, so check those parts first.
PDF, Word (DOC, DOCX), Excel (XLS, XLSX), PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX), HTML, and JPG, PNG and WebP images. Convert to JPG also opens HEIC and AVIF photos, and Images to PDF also takes TIFF. Drop a file at the top of this page to see every tool that opens it.
Yes. The tools work in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge on phones and tablets, with nothing to install. Tools that run on your device use its memory, so very large files are more comfortable on a computer.
