What Word to PDF does

Word to PDF opens your document on our server, lays it out page by page and saves that layout as a PDF. The paper size, margins and page breaks stored in the file are used as they are, so an ordinary letter, report or resume needs no setup.

A Word file does not record where each line ends; the program that opens it works that out from the fonts it has. If your document uses a font we do not have, a similar one is substituted and the result panel names the missing fonts, so you know to check line breaks and page count.

Files are uploaded when you convert, processed one at a time, and the temporary copy is deleted when each job ends. The preview shows the exact PDF you will download. A batch can hold up to 10 documents, downloaded separately or as a ZIP.

Is this the right tool?

How to convert Word to PDF

  1. Add your documents

    Select Choose Word files or drop up to 10 DOC or DOCX files, 30 MB each and 100 MB in total.

  2. Choose PDF quality

    Standard suits everyday sharing. Smaller file reduces image detail for email, and Print keeps full image detail for a print shop.

  3. Decide about comments

    Open More options and tick Include comments in the PDF only if reviewers' notes should travel with the file.

  4. Convert

    Select Convert to PDF. Files in a batch convert one after another, and finished results stay available if a later file fails.

  5. Check the preview and download

    Page through the preview, read any font notice, then choose Download PDF or Download ZIP. The Compress, Protect and Sign links pass the new PDF straight to those tools.

Worked example

A two-page resume with headings in a purchased display font

Say your resume is a two-page DOCX. The body is set in a common font, and the headings use a display font you bought for your personal brand. You add it, leave PDF quality on Standard and convert.

The preview shows the headings in a plainer typeface, and a notice names the font we could not find and says a substitute was used. The body text is unchanged, but one heading now wraps onto a second line and the last section sits lower on page two.

You have two good fixes. Change the headings to a widely available font in Word, save, and add the file again. Or, if that exact font matters, use Save as PDF in Word on your own computer, where the font is installed.

Tips for a better result

  • Accept or reject tracked changes in Word before you convert, or the markup can appear in the PDF.
  • Use real page breaks instead of pressing Enter until a new page starts. Breaks survive a font substitution; stacked blank lines do not.
  • Save an old DOC as DOCX first if you can. DOCX files get a font check and a link check that the older format does not.
  • A DOC file has to be a genuine Word 97-2003 document. If yours is refused, it was saved in another format under that name, so open it in Word and save it as .docx.

Word to PDF: questions and answers

Will the links in my Word document still be clickable in the PDF?

Yes. Web links in a DOCX are carried into the PDF, and the converter adds back any that went missing where it can locate the linked text. If a link could not be confirmed, the result panel says so. For older DOC files, click a couple of links in the downloaded PDF yourself.

Why did my page count change after converting?

A Word file stores text and formatting, not finished pages. When a font is replaced by one that is slightly wider or narrower, lines wrap differently and text moves across page boundaries. The result panel lists the substituted fonts; switching those passages to a common font fixes it.

Does Smaller file make the text blurry?

No. Text and line art stay sharp at every quality setting. Smaller file only lowers the resolution of pictures to about 150 DPI and compresses them harder, which looks fine on screen and slightly soft in print.

Can I combine several Word files into one PDF here?

Each document becomes its own PDF. Convert the batch, download the ZIP, then join the PDFs in the order you want with Merge PDF.

Is the text in the converted PDF selectable?

Yes. Text stays real text, so readers can search, select and copy it. Only pictures that already contained words, such as a pasted screenshot, remain images.
